| A group of more than 120 religious leaders announced Wednesday the formation of the “Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry in Maine”. The group is advocating for marriage for same-sex couples and has signed a declaration committing themselves “to public action, visibility, education, and mutual support in the service of the right and freedom to marry.” The faith leaders come from 14 different religious traditions and said they were encouraged to form the coalition because of momentum for marriage equality throughout New England. The leaders timed their press conference to coincide with the first day marriage licenses were issued in Connecticut. The leaders cited their concerns for same-sex couples who are unable to safeguard their relationships with marriage protections.
