When Stuart Milk stood before the president and the country and accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom on behalf of his late, slain uncle Harvey Milk, it was a moment in time and of incredible pride for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT). Yet this is a moment that will transcend identity politics because Harvey Milk represents the aspirations of all Americans. More than 200 years ago Washington, Jefferson and Adams fought to create a more perfect union. They probably had no idea that their vision would be embodied in the late 20th century by a gay, Jewish camera shop owner in San Francisco.
Stuart will have the medal on display and has offer to allow our guest to have there photo taken with his uncle's medal to help honor all our Heroes.
Stuart Milk, who was 17 when Harvey died, never officially came out to his uncle but started talking to him about "feeling different" when he was 14.
"He told me that feeling different is a gift and the world is made much stronger by celebrating people's differences," Milk recalled.
It's a sentiment Harvey Milk reinforced in a book inscription he wrote to his nephew: "You are the medicine that the world needs, even when the world doesn't know that."
