An interview with a transsexual in the Gulf,

Interview with a Kuwaiti transsexual
from http://www.mideastyouth.com/2007/07/21/interview-with-a-kuwaiti-transsexual/

Q: Firstly, what does it mean to be a transsexual?
A: I don’t even know. I am what I am and yet this is what you call me.
Q: What else can I call you?
A: My name is Alia, can’t you just treat me normally and call me by my name?
Q: I call you Alia, despite your actual name being Ali. Now I need to describe you.
A: I’m a woman. A loving, caring, honest, brave, beautiful woman. That is how you should describe me.
Q. I know that, I appreciate and respect that, but Alia, you’re actually a man. This is an obvious fact that everyone can see. Why do you love to hide and ignore it?
A: Because I hate this mistake.
Q: What mistake?
A: The mistake of being born a man when I am actually a woman. It’s not a decision I made. This is something I know.Q: When did you act upon this realization?
A: What do you mean?
Q: I mean when did you realize you’re a woman, and when did you decide to start talking, dressing, behaving, and dating like one?
A: Since I was 2 or 3 years old.
Q: Wow! That early?!
A: You can ask my parents. They don’t ever remember me acting or dressing like a boy. They would buy clothes for me and I would sneak into my sister’s room and wear hers. It has always been my ultimate dream to be a girl.
Q: Speaking of your parents, what do they think of this?
A: They hate it.
Q: What did they do about it?
A: They tolerated me as a child, thinking it was a result of growing up in an all-girls family. Eventually as I got older, they kicked me out of the house, but agreed to pay for my education abroad. They said what I’m doing is extremely shameful, and while they love and care about me, they can no longer be seen with me. They don’t like the embarrassment.
Q: What was your reaction?
A: Anger. I left right away, it was very hurtful. I was very dependent on my mother. I was also hurt because my sisters didn’t help me when I thought they would. They are also embarrassed with me because students used to make fun of them at school, when they would pick me up from class.
Q: What did your teachers say about it?
A: Nothing but funny looks of ridicule. They never helped me when others teased me. They treated me like I was a mentally ill child whenever I’d request their help. I would play with the girls in the playground and the girls used to complain that it’s a “just for girls” game. Teachers would pick me up and throw me out.
Q: Did many people tease you because of what you wore?
A: I wish it was just teasing. I was beaten and very humiliated. After I came home with a broken arm and nose, it was too dangerous for me to go to public school, so my parents forced me to switch to home schooling. Q: Was it better?
A: It was a nightmare because I felt like I could never be accepted.
Q: Are there many transsexuals in Kuwait?
A: What is a transsexual? Someone who defines his or her own gender?
Q: Someone who fully acts like the opposite gender I guess.
A: I wouldn’t know then. I hardly see any.
Q: Do you have a boyfriend or a girlfriend?
A: Boyfriends, and no not at the moment, but I’ve had some in the past.
Q: Are they Arab?
A: Yes Kuwaiti. I never dated anyone outside the country or any foreigners here.
Q: Also transsexuals? Sorry, this is for lack of a better word! I don’t mean to insist that this is what you are I just don’t know any other word for it.
A: No, they are men.
Q: In the sense that they act and dress like men or that they too are men who um… cross-dress (can I say that? I don’t mean to be offensive)
A: Act and dress like men, yes. You wouldn’t be able to tell that they have a different sexual orientation just by looking at them. Our relationships are normal.
Q: By societal standards it wouldn’t be normal, especially not in an Arab-Muslim country.
A: I realize that, I don’t give a flying fuck.
Q: Okay. So how do you deal with it?
A: By not caring what anybody else thinks.
Q: Are you Muslim?
A: The only thing I believe in is myself. I don’t subscribe to any religions. I don’t need religion to get me by in life.
Q: Why did you agree to do this interview?
A: I was kind of surprised that anyone would be interested in me and my lifestyle. I like that your team is curious enough to give us a representation.
Q: We have written a bit about homosexual/transsexuals in the Middle East but we never approached the topic of transsexuals, just because it seems to be so off limits. It’s a huge taboo that not even the blogosphere cares enough to address, I think everyone just dismisses you as “mentally ill.” It’s sad. I don’t agree with your lifestyle but I don’t think you should be laughed at/discriminated against either, I find it disgusting when people resort to that.
A: I’ve dealt with that treatment all my life… It might be very weird for me not to experience it in the region! Society is trying to make people like me hate ourselves, but we don’t. We are very proud of who are we, and if people can’t accept that, fuck them.
Q: I hope you will always stay this strong. You are actually the only transsexual I know in the Arab world, and after much thought I really thought you ought to be represented, so that whoever relates, doesn’t feel alone.
A: I really appreciate that. I apologize if I was very harsh or rude in the beginning. I’m sure you understand why people like me are bitter. We get so much shit from people.
Q: And I’m sorry about that, you don’t deserve to be treated like this. I thank you for agreeing to do this interview.
A: Thank you for including my voice in your work.

Dyke to watch out for: Alison Bechdel
By Ng Yi-Sheng

Just this month, award-winning lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel has published The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For, a bumper collection of 25 years of her work. Fridae chats with her about her life, her views, and her recent bout with censorship.

I met Alison Bechdel in the flesh on a cold autumn evening in late 2003. I was an undergrad in New York City, hurrying over to a presentation she was giving at a women's bookstore in Brooklyn, and I had the good fortune to spot her on the subway – mentally matched her up with her book cover photo: a distinctive thin, sharp face, buzzcut hairdo and black-rimmed, geek-pride glasses.

Famed for Dykes to Watch Out For series, Alison Bechdel's first graphic novel Fun Home spent two weeks in the New York Times best-seller list and garnered a string of awards.
I had the balls to go up to her and introduce myself. She was pretty surprised – seems that not a lot of people have recognised her in the street. She was, after all, one of those marginal heroes: famous only in the American gay comic book community for her long-running lesbian soap opera comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For(which, by the way, is EXCELLENT).

I told her that I had all her books, told her how much I worshipped her strips, told her told her I wanted to have her baby (yeah, I get carried away sometimes). She laughed and gave me an autograph, which I proudly showed off to straight friends who hadn’t a clue how great a cartoonist she was.

Fast forward to 2006, when Alison published her first graphic novel, Fun Home. It’s an autobiographical account of her relationship with her father, a funeral home director and English teacher who was a closeted gay man.

Suddenly her fan base exploded – her blog entries, which used to get comments in the teens, now occasionally received comments in the hundreds. Her book spent two weeks in the New York Times best-seller list, was named byEntertainment Weekly as the best non-fiction book of the year (and by Timemagazine as THE best book of the year), received two Eisners and a Stonewall Book Award and a Lambda Literary and a GLAAD Media and a… well, you get the picture.

This is all the more amazing when you consider what an intelligent book it is: it makes references to the great authors of Western civilisation from Oscar Wilde to Colette to Homer to Roald Dahl, and screws around with time and sequencing in a way that defies all those how-to-write-a-bestseller manuals.

Also remember that this is a book that’s unabashedly gay – there are drawings of cocks and breasts and vulvas on the pages, which did actually get the book temporarily banned in a Missouri public library. (Last I checked, it’s still available in the Singapore public library as well as several bookstores.)

For the past two years, I’ve been waiting for an excuse to do an interview with Ms Bechdel on Fridae – and while there’s no news of an Asian book signing tour, the author’s recently announced Fun Home is getting translated into Mandarin, with speech balloons inserted to tastefully censor the offensive genitalia.

I interrupted the cartoonist’s beach holiday to ask her a few trivial questions:

æ: Age, sex, location?

Alison: I’m 47. I like sex. At the moment I’m on the tip of Cape Cod.

æ: How's the vacation going? How's your partner Holly?

Alison: My vacation is going extremely well, I’m happy to say. Holly and I have both been working for a couple hours in the morning, then we go to the beach. It’s a nice routine.

æ: Tell us a bit about how you started out as a cartoonist - the early days of Dykes to Watch Out For.

Alison: One day soon after I graduated from college I was writing a letter to a friend. I put a silly drawing of a lesbian in the margin, a crazy naked woman about to throw a pot of coffee. I don’t know where it came from, or why I titled Dykes To Watch Out For, Plate No. 27. But it seemed to beg for at least 26 more dykes, so I set about drawing the rest of them and never stopped.

Soon after I’d collected a small sheaf of them, friends suggested that I submit them to the feminist paper where we all volunteered. I did, and eventually started syndicating them to other papers.

æ: I'm really impressed by how Dykes to Watch Out For has kept up with the times - the inclusion of Samia, an Arab lesbian character, was particularly interesting. Want to comment on that?

Alison: Samia emerged in the strip gradually. Her first appearance was in 2002, at an antiwar rally during the buildup to the invasion of Iraq. My character Ginger pets her dog. Then months later, Samia and Ginger meet again when Samia's dog escapes as she's walking her. That's when they started dating. After 9/11, I just got more educated and aware of Arab-American culture, and felt like my strip was obviously missing an Arab character.

æ: Tell us about Fun Home.

Alison: I was really lucky with Fun Home to catch the graphic novel wave at a very good time. The book was pretty successful, which was an immensely gratifying experience after 25 years of being fairly culturally invisible.

æ: Could you tell us a little about the Mandarin translation of Fun Home

Alison: A private publisher called Beijing Zito, which is starting a graphic book series, is going to be co-publishing the book with Shaanxi Normal Universal Press, an official government publisher. It’s kind of amazing that it’s happening - apparently Houghton Mifflin’s Chinese subagent worked really hard to make the deal. I don’t know who’s doing the work of translation - I don’t really get consulted about that.

æ: And what’s your take on the fact that they’re censoring the nudity in the book?

Alison: I’m not thrilled about it, but it feels like a compromise worth making, to get the book to a Chinese audience. I have no idea how it came about - it’s kind of funny comparing the offending drawings, before and after they’ve been censored. In a way, the censored ones look more obscene.

[Note: Fun Home also experienced a brush with censorship back in 2006, when the book was removed from a public library in Marshall, Missouri after complaints from a resident of the town. Fortunately, the library committee voted to restore the book to circulation. Bechdel has described the attempted ban as “a great honor… part of the whole evolution of the graphic novel form.”]

æ: What other languages have you been translated into?

Alison: There’ve been quite a few translations. I haven’t even kept track of them. French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, German, the traditional Chinese one. I think there’s a Swedish one coming out, and a Hungarian one.

æ: Did you ever imagine you - and the queer community in general - would be where we are today?

Alison: No! It’s mind blowing.

æ: What do you think the queer community should be fighting for right now?

Alison: The movement has definitely drifted a bit too far toward mainstream values like marriage for my taste. If it were up to me, we’d still be fighting for the things that conservatives fear we actually are fighting for - the abolition of marriage, for example. But liberation movements work in mysterious ways. Maybe gay marriage is the most radical thing to hit the planet.

æ: Do you still see yourself as an activist in any way?

Alison: I’ve never seen myself as an activist. I don’t have the temperament.

æ: What other comic book artists - especially queer comic book artists - should we be looking out for now?

Alison: Ariel Schrag, Tim Fish, Victor Hodge… I was sorry to hear recently that Robert Kirby has stopped doing his strip “Curbside”. But I hope he’ll keep editing “Boy Trouble”.

æ: What's your proudest achievement?

Alison: Cranking out Dykes To Watch Out For regularly for 25 years.

Jennifer Camper - The queer comics pioneer

from http://www.sequentialtart.com/archive/aug05/13quest_0805.shtml

Jennifer Camper by Denise Sudell

Jennifer Camper is a queer comics pioneer. Way back in 1980 — even before Alison Bechdel's seemingly-eternal Dykes to Watch Out For (DTWOF) first appeared — Camper's first strip, Cookie Jones, Lesbian Detective, was published in the national newsweekly Gay Community News (aka GCN). Since then, her comics and illustrations have appeared in magazines and newspapers from Ms. Magazine and The Village Voice to On Our Backs and Bad Attitude, and turned up in numerous anthologies from The Great Women Cartoonist and Sexual Harassment: Women Speak Out to Dyke Strippers and Ex-Lover Weird Shit. Her own books include Rude Girls and Dangerous Women, a collection of her cartoons that mix humor with political commentary, and subGURLZ, a graphic novel following the adventures of three women living in abandoned subway tunnels.

Jen's latest production to hit the streets is Juicy Mother: Celebration, a comix anthology focusing on the work of women, people of color and queers. She edited the book, contributed a story called "Ramadan" about the experiences of Arab dykes before and after 9/11, and took part in a wildly hilarious comic jam that featured such creators as Bechdel, Hothead Paisancreator Diane DiMassa, and queer comics god/Stuck Rubber Baby creator Howard Cruse throwing a party for their respective characters — a party that degenerates (or, if you prefer, upgrades) into an orgy. Sample Camper contribution: Camper's creation Roxie, squeezing the crotch of DWTOF's main character, straitlaced political activist Mo: "C'mon, Mo! I've got a 12-inch dildo with your name on it!!"
But this summary doesn't give anywhere near a complete sense of the outrageously-twisted, delectably-offensive creativity of Jennifer Camper. Back in her GCN days, I was the paper's news editor, and we spent some time hanging out together, so I got to witness some of her escapades first-hand. Like the cover she produced for the paper in 1982, just two weeks after the GCNoffices were torched and destroyed, and the supporters of the extremely-nonprofit paper were trying to raise funds to keep it from folding. The cover so scandalized some of the paper's less open-minded backers that they threatened to let the paper die (it didn't, at least not right then). You can see a copy of the offending cover right next to this column.
Then there was the Valentine's Day night when, after a concert, a bunch of us who were feeling rather anti-romantic, including Jennifer, went to a swanky hotel lobby to hang out. Especially for the occasion, Jennifer had produced a lot of little construction-paper hearts, colored black and bile green, inscribed with such heartwarming slogans as "Everybody Hates You." We scurried about the lobby, planting the hearts in the highly-expensive flower arrangements and scattering them like confetti for all the besotted couples to discover among their seat cushions. Best Valentine's Day I've ever had.
Jen and I lost touch for a couple of decades, but ran into each other again in queer comics circles when I started writing forSequential Tart. So I figured I could use our old comradeship as bait (or possibly blackmail) to convince her to answer 13 Questions for Tart. She readily agreed.
1. How did you get started cartooning?
I always drew and wrote when I was a kid, sometimes on my own and sometimes with my sister and brother. Later, I started doing comics in school. I remember one long illustrated story I did in the sixth grade that described the secret lives of our teachers (mostly spies and criminals) and featured a hairy character called "Camper" who was of unknown gender and was referred to as "it."
I continued doing comics in high school and college, and most of the stories ridiculed school policies, teachers and other students. Interestingly, I found that people didn't mind being made fun of in the comics because they were so excited to see themselves in a cartoon. I also added a lot of cartoons to my school papers. I remember one professor telling me not to do it, but later I noticed he had my cartoons hanging on the wall in his office.
After getting out of school, I began publishing cartoons and illustrations in [GCN] and in Gay Comix, edited by Howard Cruse. Howard is the Godfather of queer comics and has mentored so many of us. He is unfailingly generous in sharing his knowledge and techniques.
2. Where did the title "Juicy Mother" come from?
It just floated in on the wind. I like the word "mother" because it can mean both "Mother" — creator and nurturer — and "Mutha." I like the word "juicy" because, well, who doesn't?
3. It appears that it took a while for this anthology to get published: some of the stories were created as far back as 1995, and at least one of the contributors jokes in his bio about how long the book was taking. Can you give us the dirt about the trials and tribulations you suffered getting Juicy Mother: Celebration to press?
I started compiling work for this anthology without a publisher lined up. Life got in the way, and the project sat on the back burner for awhile. I slowly got enough pages together, then slowly scanned and digitally formatted all the art. (This was back when most of the comics were submitted via hard copy.) It took another year or two to shop it around and find a publisher. Some of the older stories in the book are comics that folks had drawn, but for one reason or another had never been published, and I thought Juicy Mother would be a way for them to finally get in print. For example, the jam was originally drawn for Outlook (a now-defunct national lesbian/gay quarterly), but the magazine folded.
Once I found a publisher, it took over a year to be released because publishers line up their books a year or two in advance. I'm very grateful to Soft Skull Press for publishing this anthology and for all their support. And I'm thrilled they've agreed to publish another issue next year.
4. In Juicy Mother: Celebration, you identify yourself as a Lebanese-American dyke. Do you have any horror stories to tell about being regarded/used as the token lesbian or the token Arab (or both)?
Not really. Because I'm mixed, most people don't know I'm half Arab. I've had experiences where people have unknowingly said horrible anti-Arab things in my face. When I bust them on their racism, they fall all over themselves trying to justify what they've said, and that's always pretty amusing.
I wasn't really part of an Arab community, except for my family, until the 1990's when I began to meet other queer Arabs and Iranians. I thought their experiences were amazing and I began to do comics about them. For a lot of queer Arab women it's a struggle to be a lesbian in the Arab community, and also difficult to be Arab in the gay community. When I met other Arab dykes, many of them were trying to come to terms with being queer in the context of their Arab culture. I was a half-breed dyke trying to connect with my Arab side in the context of my queer life. We sort of met in the middle.
Before 9/11, Arabs and Muslims were pretty much invisible to most Americans. Now it's the flavor of the month. It's nice to have people take an interest, but frustrating that it took an attack on America to have that happen.
5. What's the source of your sick and twisted sense of humor?
A happy combination of nature and nurture.
6. In the intro to Juicy Mother: Celebration, you say you want "an alternative to the alternative" comics, and ask, "Where are the comix by and about women, people of color and queers?" Do you have a favorite as-yet-undiscovered cartoonist or comics creator (other than those featured in your anthology) whose work you'd like to tell Tart readers about?
Here's just a few cartoonists who, though not really undiscovered, deserve much more attention — Mikhaela Reid, Jamaica Dyer, Erika Moen, Neil Babra, Colleen Coover, Justin Hall, Sara Varon, Justine Shaw, and Ellen Lindner. Some of these artists will have work in Juicy Mother Issue 2.
7. How did you manage to lure Hothead Paisan creator Diane DiMassa out of retirement?
Promises of lavish parties, cheap broads, and piles of money. All lies, but she fell for it.
8. Is it true that Diamond Comics Distributors, the exclusive distributor for the major comics companies, isn't distributingJuicy Mother? If so, why not?
Juicy Mother is carried by Diamond. My publisher tells me they placed an order in January 2005. Last GaspCold Cut,PGW and other distributors also carry the book.
9. What's the most fun you've ever had deliberately trying to piss somebody off?
That time with the senator's daughter and the stolen pickup truck comes to mind, but I'm not supposed to talk about it according to the court settlement.
10. What's the most outrageous thing you've ever done in public?
Sat quiet like an angel.

11. What's your favorite sex toy?
Skin.
12. What projects are you working on now?
I have a comic in the latest issue of the Arab American journalMizna and I just finished a cartoon for Bitch magazine that will be in their fall 2005 issue. Also, I'm working on Juicy Mother 2: How They Met to be published by Soft Skull Pressin spring 2006.
13. How have you managed to stay out of jail for all these years?
Amazing good luck, and having many disguises.

Call on The New York Times to Check Accuracy of Anti-Gay Advertisement

Call on The New York Times to Check Accuracy of Anti-Gay Advertisement

In the December 5, 2008 edition of The New York Times, The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty published a full page advertisement that makes inaccurate and unsubstantiated claims about supposed “violence and intimidation” against religious groups by “mobs” since the passage of Proposition 8.
When GLAAD learned about the ad earlier this week, we contacted The New York Times, and after repeated back and forth, they said that while they recognized our strong concerns about publishing misleading assertions, “we do not require opinion advertisers to document them unless we believe they are potentially libelous or otherwise legally actionable.”

Click to see a larger version of the ad.
Neil G. Giuliano, President of GLAAD, made the following statement:
The factual inaccuracies made by the Becket Fund in this grossly misleading ad have no place in The New York Times or any credible media outlet.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and allies across the country have worked to make our voices heard in the face of laws that strip away vital protections for members of our community.  The peaceful marches and rallies that have occurred since the passage of Prop 8 have given us an opportunity to become more visible and make our voices heard, and it is unacceptable for media platforms, particularly ones as respected as The New York Times, to provide space for groups to make misleading and false attacks that would only seek to silence us.
It is unacceptable to publish these kinds of dishonest claims.
The New York Times needs to hear from you.  Contact them TODAY and demand that they discontinue allowing inaccurate claims in their advertising: letters@nytimes.com.
For tips on writing letters to the editor, see GLAAD’s Media Essentials Training Manual.

Exorcism in Russia

Hear an extraordinary recording of an actual exorcism

By Stephen Wagner, About.com

A sixteen-year-old girl sits in a chair in a Russian Orthodox Church. She is being held down by her mother. Light filters in from high windows and the air is thick with tension and the smell of holy incense. A priest stands over her reading the rite of exorcism. The girl squirms in her mother’s arms, groaning and growling as if the priest’s words were a torment to her mind and soul. The girl struggles violently, her groans becoming inhuman howls and deep, guttural moans of psychological pain. Then she lashes out at the priest, and in a voice that seems not to be her own, spits words of defiance.

This is not a scene from a Hollywood production. This is a partial description of an actual exorcism that took place in a Russian parish on May 1, 2004.

  • You can hear an actual recorded excerpt from this exorcism here (Windows MediaPlayer required). (WARNING: Do not listen if you are easily upset or disturbed by such things. Although there is no foul language, in English anyway, the sounds may be disturbing to some.)

This recording was made by Eugene Safronov, who is an assistant to one of the exorcists in the Russian Orthodox Church. Although he did not assist in this particular case, he was a witness, and has assisted another priest in many other instances.

Exorcisms on the Rise

The ideas of demonic possession and exorcism seem archaic and a peculiar anachronism in the high-tech, scientifically enlightened world of the 21st century. Most rational people regard the notion of demons as superstition. People who in the Middle Ages were thought to be possessed by demons and other evil spirits are now usually considered to be suffering from such brain disorders as Tourette Syndrome, schizophrenia, epilepsy or any number of psychiatric problems. At best, they are people with overactive imaginations under the negative influence of the occult and related media.

Yet the battle between the possessed and the exorcists continues today, with a growing number of people believing that it is all too real:

  • In February, 2005, about 100 Catholic priests signed up for a Vatican-sanctioned course on exorcism. According to the LA Times, “In Italy, the number of official exorcists has soared during the last 20 years to between 300 and 400, church officials say. But they aren't enough to handle the avalanche of requests for help from hundreds of tormented people who believe they are possessed. In the United States, the shortage is even more acute.”
  • In January, 2005, psychiatrist M. Scott Peck published a book, Glimpses of the Devil: A True Story of Evil, Possession, Exorcism and Redemption, which he says is an account of some of his patients that he believes were possessed by the demonic. Although most of his colleagues say that “possession” is just mental illness, Peck told The Dallas Morning News in an interview, “Possession is a mental illness, with a demonic involvement.”
  • Even the book and subsequent movie, The Exorcist, was loosely based on a real exorcism that took place in St. Louis in 1949. The last priest involved in the case, Rev. Walter H. Halloran, died on March 1, 2005. Although the book and film took liberties with the actual events of the case, Halloran said he observed streaks and arrows and words like “hell” that would rise on the child’s skin.

Exorcism

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saint Francis exorcised demons in Arezzo, in a depiction on a fresco by Giotto.

Exorcism (from Late Latin exorcismus, from Greek exorkizein - to abjure) is the practice of evicting demons or other evil spiritual entities from a person or place which they are believed to have possessed. The practice is quite ancient and part of the belief system of many countries.

The person performing the exorcism, known as an exorcist, is often a member of the clergy, or an individual thought to be graced with special powers or skills. The exorcist may use prayers, and religious material, such as set formulas, gestures, symbols, icons, amulets, etc.. The exorcist often invokes God, Jesus and/or several different angels and archangels to intervene with the exorcism.

In general, possessed persons are not regarded as evil in themselves, nor wholly responsible for their actions. Therefore, practitioners regard exorcism as more of a cure than a punishment. The mainstream rituals usually take this into account, making sure that there is no violence to the possessed, only that they be tied down if there is potential for violence.[1]

History

The concept of possession by evil spirits and the practice of exorcism are very ancient and widespread, and may have originated in prehistoric Shamanistic beliefs.

The Christian New Testament includes exorcism among the miracles performed by Jesus. Because of this precedent, demonic possession was part of the belief system of Christianity since its beginning, and exorcism is still a recognized practice of Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox and some Protestant sects. The Church of England also has an official exorcist in each diocese.[2]

After the Enlightenment, the practice of exorcism has diminished in its importance to most religious groups and its use had decreased, especially in Western society. Generally, in the 20th century, its use was found mainly in Eastern Europe and Africa, with some cases gaining media coverage; Anneliese Michel is perhaps the most recent of these. This is due mainly to the study of psychology and the functioning and structure of the human mind. Many of the cases that, in the past, were candidates for exorcism are often explained to be the products of mental illness, and are handled as such.

However in 1973 the motion picture The Exorcist came out, and the idea of exorcisms became thrust into the limelight. After its release, a very large response came from the public in the United States and Europe, and belief in Demon Possession and exorcisms found a place in contemporary society. Belief in the validity of the practice became less of a radical idea, and more widespread.[3]

Exorcism in Christianity

Jesus

In Christianity, exorcisms are performed using the "power of Christ" or "in the Name of Jesus." This is founded in the belief that Jesus commanded His followers to expel evil spirits in His name(Matthew 10:1,Matthew 10:8; Mark 6:7; Luke 9:110:17),(Mark 16:17). According to the Catholic Encyclopedia article on Exorcism: Jesus cast out demons as a sign of his Messiahship and empowered his disciples to do the same.[4].

The Jewish Encyclopedia article on Jesus stated that Jesus "was devoted especially to casting out demons" and also believed that He passed this on to His followers; however, He was superior to them in the exorcisms."[5]

In the time of Jesus, non-New Testament Jewish sources report of exorcisms done by administering drugs with poisonous root extracts or others by making sacrifices. (Josephus, "B. J." vii. 6, § 3; Sanh. 65b). They do not report of Jesus being an exorcist, but do mention that exorcisms were done by the Essene branch of Judaism (Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran).

Roman Catholicism

The belief in Roman Catholicism is that, unlike baptism or confession, exorcism is one ritual that is not a sacrament. Unlike a sacrament, exorcism's "integrity and efficacy do not depend ... on the rigid use of an unchanging formula or on the ordered sequence of prescribed actions. Its efficacy depends on two elements: authorization from valid and licit Church authorities, and the faith of the exorcist."[6] That being said, Catholic exorcism is still one of the most rigid and organized of all existing exorcism rituals. Solemn exorcisms, according to the Canon law of the church, can be exercised only by an ordained priest (or higher prelate), with the express permission of the local bishop, and only after a careful medical examination to exclude the possibility of mental illness. The Catholic Encyclopedia (1908) enjoined: "Superstition ought not to be confounded with religion, however much their history may be interwoven, nor magic, however white it may be, with a legitimate religious rite." Things listed in the Roman Ritual as being indicators of possible demonic possession include: speaking foreign or ancient languages of which the possessed has no prior knowledge; supernatural abilities and strength; knowledge of hidden or remote things which the possessed has no way of knowing, an aversion to anything holy, profuse blasphemy, or sacrilege.

The Catholic Church revised the Rite of Exorcism in January 1999, though the traditional Rite of Exorcism in Latin is allowed as an option. The act of exorcism is considered to be an incredibly dangerous spiritual task. The ritual assumes that possessed persons retain their free will, though the demon may hold control over their physical body, and involves prayers, blessings, and invocations with the use of the document Of Exorcisms and Certain Supplications. Other formulas may have been used in the past, such as the Benedictine Vade retro satana. In the modern era, the Catholic Church rarely authorizes exorcism, approaching would-be cases with the presumption that mental or physical illness is in play. In mild cases the Chaplet of Saint Michael should be used[citation needed].

Anglicanism

In 1974, the Church of England set up the "Deliverance Ministry". As part of its creation, every diocese in the country was equipped with a team trained in both exorcism and psychiatry. According to its representatives, most cases brought before it have conventional explanations, and actual exorcisms are quite rare; although, blessings are sometimes given to people for psychological reasons.[2]

In The Episcopal Church, the Book of Occasional Services discusses provision for exorcism; but it does not indicate any specific rite, nor does it establish an office of "exorcist".[7] Diocesan exorcists usually continue in their role when they have retired from all other church duties. Anglican priests may not perform an exorcism without permission from the Diocesan bishop. An exorcism is not usually performed unless the bishop and his team of specialists (including a psychiatrist and physician) have approved it.

Protestant denominations

Some Protestant denominations also recognize possession and exorcism, although the practice is generally less formalized than it is in the Catholic Church. The Methodist Church also has appointed people in place for use in such circumstances.[8] While some denominations perform exorcism very sparingly and cautiously, some may perform it almost routinely, as part of regular religious services.

Psychiatrist M. Scott Peck researched exorcisms (initially in an effort to disprove demonic possession), and claims to have conducted two himself. He concluded that the Christian concept of possession was a genuine phenomenon. He derived diagnostic criteria somewhat different from those used by the Roman Catholic Church. He also claimed to see differences in exorcism procedures and progression. After his experiences, and in an attempt to get his research validated, he has attempted to get the psychiatric community to add the definition of "Evil" to the DSMIV.[9]

Deliverance

In the less formalized sections of Protestant denominations, the ritual can take many forms and belief structures, especially in Charismatic Movement. The most common of these is the deliverance ceremony. This differs from the exorcism ceremony by the fact that the Devil may have gotten a foothold, into a persons life rather than gaining complete control. If complete control has been gained, a full fledged exorcism is necessary. However, a "spirit-filled Christian" cannot be possessed, based on their beliefs. Within this belief structure, the reasons for the devil to get a foothold are usually explained to be some sort of deviation from theological doctrine or because of pre-conversion activities (like dealing with the occult).[10][11]

The method for determining if a person needs a deliverance is done by having someone present who has the gift of discerning of spirits. This is a gift of the Holy Spirit from 1 Corinthians 12 that allows a person to "sense" in some way an evil presence.[12] While the initial diagnosis is usually uncontested by the congregation, when many people are endowed with this gift in a single congregation, results may vary.[13]

Fr. Gabriele Amorth references these people, calling them "seers and Sensitives," and uses them on many occasions; they have the ability to detect an evil presence. However, he notes that "they are not always right: their 'feelings' must be checked out." In his examples, they are able to detect the events that caused the demon to enter, or are able to discover the evil object that has cursed the individual. He notes that "they are always humble."[14]

Exorcism in Scientology

Scientology believes that foreign beings known as Body thetans have clustered themselves around a person and cause them confusion. It is the goal of Scientology to remove these beings from a person.

On Scientology advanced level "OT3", "body thetans" are exorcised using a complicated technique. Body thetan exorcism, with a simpler technique, is revisited on advanced level "OT5", also known as "New Era Dianetics for Operating Thetans."[15] after these levels (which are used to accomplish other goals as well, not just an "exorcism" for Body Thetans) you are supposed to be free from the BT's influence. It should be noted that Scientologists believe that Body thetans possess every person, except for those who have been exorcised.

Exorcism In Sikhism

Exorcism Projects are also carried out in various Gurdwaras, especially in Punjab, healing all the affected patients. The Spiritual Leader(Called Baba), uses the power of Gurbani or spreads the ambrosial nectar(i.e Amrit) on the affected person. They also put a Tabeez called Rakh on hand which contains small slips written Waheguru in it. These Babas communicate directly with the spirit, either good or evil, residing in a person. Sikhism on one side says these are Manmat(Anti Sikh Activities), but Sikhism also promotes recovering or helping the patient.

Notable exorcisms

Salvador Dalí is reputed to have received an exorcism from Italian friar, Gabriele Maria Berardi, while he was in France in 1947. Dali created a sculpture of Christ on the cross which he gave the friar in thanks.[16]

Anneliese Michel was a Catholic woman from Germany who was said to be possessed by six or more demons and subsequently underwent an exorcism in 1975. Two motion pictures, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Requiem are loosely based on Anneliese's story.

A boy identified by the pseudonym "Roland Doe" was the subject of an exorcism in 1949, which became the subject of The Exorcist, a horror novel and later film written by William Peter Blatty. Blatty heard about the case while he was a student in the class of 1950 at Georgetown University. The exorcism was partially performed in both Cottage City, Maryland and Bel-Nor, Missouri[17] by Father William S. Bowdern, S.J. and a then Jesuit scholastic Fr. Walter Halloran, S.J.[18]

Mother Teresa underwent an exorcism late in life under the direction of the Archbishop of Calcutta, Henry D'Souza, after he noticed she seemed to be extremely agitated in her sleep and feared she "might be under the attack of the evil one."[19]

Scientific view

The Roman Catholic Ritual of exorcism approaches the subject with a procedure of presuming of mental or physical illness and employing mental health and medical professionals to rule out physical or mental causes before authorization of the exorcism ritual. When all possible benign causes of exorcism are ruled out, the case is treated as a malignant demonic possession.

Demonic possession is not a valid psychiatric or medical diagnosis recognized by either the DSM-IV or the ICD-10. Those who profess a belief in demonic possession have sometimes ascribed the symptoms associated with mental illnesses such as hysteria, mania, psychosis, Tourette's syndrome, epilepsy, schizophrenia or dissociative identity disorder to possession.[20][21][22] In cases of dissociative identity disorder in which the altar personality is questioned as to its identity, 29% are reported to identify themselves as demons.[23] Additionally, there is a form of monomania called demonomania or demonopathy in which the patient believes that he or she is possessed by one or more demons.

The fact that exorcism works on people experiencing symptoms of possession is by some attributed to placebo effect and the power of suggestion.[24] Some supposedly possessed persons are actually narcissists or are suffering from low self-esteem and act a "demon possessed person" in order to gain attention.[20]
